My latest adventure has taken me on a road trip that winds through some of Europe’s most charming and historically rich cities. From the small village of Erpel, I’ll be heading through Bonn, then onto Pleinfeld, Nuremberg, Vienna, and finally Prague. Each destination offers its own unique flavor of culture, architecture, and history. This first part of my journey kicks off in the quaint streets of Erpel and the vibrant city of Bonn.
Erpel: A Hidden Gem Along the Rhine
Starting off in Erpel, I was immediately taken by how this village seemed like it belonged in another time. It’s the perfect place to begin a road trip when you want to ease into things. The small, winding cobblestone streets and charming half-timbered houses felt like the perfect quiet introduction before diving into more bustling cities. I took a walk up to the famous Erpeler Ley, which gave me a panoramic view of the Rhine river below. That feeling of peace, standing there with the world below, was exactly what I needed to get into the road trip mindset.
The village itself may be small, but it has a lot to offer if you appreciate peaceful moments. I spent the afternoon wandering, snapping some candid shots of the old town, and just breathing in the atmosphere. Erpel felt like a perfect little break from the world.
Bonn: Beethoven, Art, and Modern Vibes
After soaking up the calm of Erpel, it was time for a change of pace with a bike tour into Bonn. The contrast between these two places is exactly why I love road trips—you can go from total tranquility to the buzz of a city in the blink of an eye.
Bonn is packed with culture, from its historical roots to its contemporary art scene. Walking through the birthplace of Beethoven was a reminder of how much history and talent comes from this small but mighty city. It’s always a surreal experience standing in a place that once held such greatness.
Beyond the history, I wanted to get a taste of modern Bonn, so I headed to the Bundeskunsthalle, where I could dive into some contemporary art. I’ve always loved the mix of classical and modern, and this museum struck the perfect balance. It felt like a creative spark lit up as I wandered through the exhibitions. I, of course, took some time to photograph the architecture of the museum itself—it’s bold and modern, which fits right in with the vibe of the city.
On the Road Again
With Bonn now behind me, I’m gearing up for the next leg of the trip—heading towards Pleinfeld and Nuremberg. Each stop feels like it’s adding a different layer to this journey, and I can’t wait to see what’s waiting in the cities ahead.
This road trip is shaping up to be an amazing blend of history, culture, and creativity. Stay tuned for part two, where I’ll share my experiences in Pleinfeld and Nuremberg, as I make my way towards the heart of Europe.
Until then, Erpel and Bonn have set the bar high for what’s to come!
